On Thursday, the Senate confirmed Kugler, a Colombian-American economist, to a seat on the Federal Reserve Board. If confirmed, the Kugler would be the first Latin American to serve on the Fed’s Board in 109 years.
“This is a historic moment,” said Menendez, the ranking member of the Senate’s Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, in a floor speech arguing for Kugler’s confirmation.
Menendez, whose parents immigrated from Colombia, said,
“Sen. Menendez and his colleagues have the opportunity to make history. To hear her tell her story is to listen to the American dream come to life,”
Kugler, a labor and international economics specialist, is the group executive director of the World Bank for the United States.
She took a sabbatical from Georgetown University in 2010, where she has taught public policy and economics and served as vice provost. She served as chief economist of the Labor Department from September 2011 through January 2013 under the Obama administration.
