Pichai remembered his time in the U.S. and his father’s excitement when he got his first email address in India. Pichai was eager to use this new and cheaper way to communicate, so he sent his father an email.
It took him two days to get a response that read, “Dear Mr. Pichai, I received your email. Everything is fine.” Pichai was perplexed by this formality and the long wait, so he called his father to explain.
To Pichai’s astonishment, his father’s office computer had to download the email, print it, and send it to him in person. Pichai then dictated a reply, which was rephrased and sent back to him.
