The Pilgrimage Site Of Japan Is Flooded With Visitors Since “Mount Fuji Is Screaming”

With millions of tourists visiting annually and buses, trucks, noodle stands, and refrigerator magnets, Japan’s Mount Fuji isn’t the tranquil tourist destination it used to be.

Now, local officials say the number of hikers climbing the world-famous mountain night and day is dangerous and a threat to the environment. “Mount Fuji is screaming,” the governor of the region said last week.

Because of its religious significance and its artistic inspiration, UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 2013 as an “internationally recognized icon of Japan.”

However, as in the case of Bruges, Belgium, or Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, the designation has also had its ups and downs. Visitors to the park more than doubled from 2012 to 2019, reaching 5.1 million – and that’s just for the main starting point of Yamanashi.
